Our review

If you've ever bought cups of ice from Sonic just for the ice, this machine is for you. The EUHOMY Nugget Ice Maker produces soft, crunchy, chewable pebble ice — the kind that absorbs your drink's flavour and is satisfying to crunch. It's the polar opposite of those hard, hollow bullet-shaped cubes from standard ice makers.

The mechanism is straightforward: fill the 1.2qt water tank, press the button, and the first nuggets drop in about 6-8 minutes. Leave it running and it produces up to 34 lbs per day, filling the 1.8lb removable basket in about 30 minutes to an hour. No water line needed — just pour water in and go. The auto-cleaning cycle runs with one button press, and the removable top cover lets you actually see and wipe down the internal reservoir — a huge advantage over competitors with sealed, inaccessible internals that grow mould.

It's compact (under 13 inches tall) with a carry handle, making it genuinely portable for RVs, camping, or just moving between the kitchen counter and the patio.

The honest downsides: this is an ice MAKER, not an ice KEEPER. The basket isn't insulated, so unattended ice will melt (the water recirculates to make more). Serious ice users run it for a few hours and bag the ice into the freezer. Some units fail after several months — the 12% 1-star reviews are mostly reliability complaints. And the noise is debatable: quieter than a blender, louder than a fridge. For the price (~$130), it delivers genuinely delicious ice if you understand it's not a commercial machine.

  • Ice basket is small — fills up quickly
  • Noise is noticeable, though not extremely loud
  • Must let machine settle 24 hours before first use if shipped sideways

FAQ

Does it make real Sonic-style nugget ice?

It makes soft, crunchy pebble ice that's very close to Sonic ice. It's not identical to commercial machines, but it's chewable, flavour-absorbing nugget ice — the exact type people crave.

Does it keep the ice frozen?

No. It's an ice maker, not a freezer. Unattended ice will eventually melt (the water recirculates to make more). Transfer ice to your freezer if you want to store it.

How loud is it?

Under 50 dB according to the manufacturer — quieter than a blender, about the level of a quiet conversation. You'll hear it running, but it's not disruptive.

Does it need a water line?

No. Just pour water into the 1.2qt tank. No plumbing required — that's what makes it portable for RVs, camping, or moving around the house.

How do you clean it?

Press and hold the Ice/Clean button for 3 seconds to run a 15-minute auto-clean cycle. The removable top cover also lets you wipe down the internal reservoir manually — much better access than sealed competitors.
